Carly Tait (PLY) is a retired Paralympian and global Diversity & Inclusion consultant working with organisations to develop their D&I strategies and action plans.

Hi I am Carly Tait, I am 37 and live in Manchester, UK with my partner and our little boy!

I am a retired Paralympian, having competed at Rio 2016 and then at the 2017 World Para-Athletics Championships in London. My journey into sport is far from being typical! Before sport I was surrounded by prejudice, discrimination and a lack of self-belief, but a trip to London changed all of this in 2012. I went from being a 27 year old party-goer and smoker, to ranking number 5 in the world just 5 years later. For the first time in my life I felt I had achieved something that I previously thought was impossible.

Shortly after my athletics career in 2017 I decided to go back in to my long standing career in Marketing, however after falling pregnant quickly after, I went on maternity leave and life changed a lot!

Whilst on maternity I found it difficult to leave the world of sport behind and on reflection I felt that this was because of how it made me feel. I felt a sense of purpose, belonging and achievement that I had found hard to replicate in every day life, especially in the workplace.

In this 60-minute session you will learn about my “zero to hero” sporting journey, which took me from the couch and put me on the 100m start line at the 2016 Rio Paralympics in the space of just four years. Discover how I leveraged years of prejudice, discrimination and a lack of self-belief to fulfil an impossible dream.

The session explores the social construct of disability and its role in creating systemic oppression; perpetuated by the inauthenticity and inaccuracy of media representation and its limiting narratives.
I’ll discuss how inclusion and representation can create opportunities for your colleagues, customers and communities by giving you an understanding of:
  • Lived experience
  • Ableism
  • Media representation
  • Resilience
  • Goal setting
  • Inclusive Leadership

What people say

Carly was just amazing! Few things that stood out- personable storytelling, excellent time management, holding the audience, appealing to your customers (Marketing/CX) and lastly leaving with thoughts & actions to track where you are and where you want to be.”

Carly was excellent in all ways! She was an incredible facilitator and story-teller. So organized and kept us engaged the entire time…her story was powerful, and myself (and our company) feel lucky to have been a part of it…”
