Kriss Akabusi

Kriss Akabusi MBE’s story is one which epitomises the positive impact of mentorship and identifying potential.

Born in Paddington, London to parents who were studying in London, Kriss would later be brought up in foster care with his brother Riba, after their parents returned to their home country of Nigeria when he was four.

Although, it had its ups and downs, looking back, Kriss views being in the children’s home as a positive experience. The children’s home provided him with safety, security and a place to belong, something that Kriss believes is key to creating a strong foundation for success. At school however, Kriss just “got by”, and the system didn’t “catch him” as Kriss muses. The system itself was very rigid and regimental and didn’t cater for his larger than life personality, and as it would be, Kriss left school with 9 “NO- Levels” as he humorously calls them.

At age 16, Kriss was forced to leave the safety and stability of the care system, and joined the British Army. It was here that he met his first real mentor, the first person to truly identify potential in him; Sergeant Ian MacKenzie. It was MacKenzie’s leadership and belief in Kriss that paved the way for the stellar athletics career that followed. This story, and anecdotes from his childhood, all feature in Kriss’ presentations as he delivers messages of self-belief, over coming obstacles, unifying around a common dream, diversity and inclusion, the importance of belonging, and the impact of good leadership.

Kriss Akabusi is famous for his achievements in athletics where his greatest individual triumph was his Gold Medal in the 1990 European Championships when he also beat David Hemery’s 22 year old British Record. He began his international athletic career in 1983 as a member of the 4×400 metre relay squad and will probably always be remembered for helping Britain clinch the Gold and beat the Americans in the World Championships 4×400 metre relay in Tokyo in 1991.

In 1992 as 3 x Olympic medallist, World, European and Commonwealth Champion Kriss was awarded the MBE by Her Majesty The Queen in her Birthday Honours List in recognition of his services to the country through athletics.

Since then Kriss has gone to have a very successful media career, and is regularly consulted on various radio and television programmes, on topics ranging from leadership, diversity, business and inspiration. Kriss Akabusi MBE is currently the CEO of The Akabusi Company, a corporate communications and training company where his marvellous personality and reputation as a fantastic public speaker have made him a very popular and attractive advocate.

Kriss Akabusi MBE is also an accredited personal coach, having qualified at the Hudson Institute of Santa Barbara, and is a certified Motivational Maps and Clarity 4D practitioner.

Kriss’ inspirational story is legendary and works well at the start of a conference to fire up the delegates or as an endnote, leaving the audience on a high and ready to deliver success in their arena.

Everyone was inspired, energised, and we were so pleased you felt able to spend so much extra time talking to people, posing for photos and giving out advice. Everyone has said what a privilege and pleasure it was to meet you and how you helped to make our event ‘the best ever.’ We really appreciated the care you took to learn about our organisation, our staff and the issues we face and weave that into your performance. I really look forward to seeing you again and will be giving you the highest possible recommendation to other people looking for charismatic and energising speakers.”

Individual-Speakers-Quote

Kriss was absolutely fantastic at our event. He hit exactly the right note and as we watched the video of the World Championships of 1991. All 450 of our delegates were cheering him on around the last bend and down the home straight as he secured Gold for GB. His enthusiasm and passion throughout his presentation and in fact the whole evening was totally infectious and above all he is just a thoroughly lovely guy!! I would recommend Kriss for any audience, anytime!.”
