TOPICS:

Andi uses his personal experience of various Adverse Childhood Experiences to assist other young people to avoid making the same life choices he made.

Andi delivers the Unlocked MSc Degree in Custodial Leadership to Prison Officer Graduates. Andi has an extensive 15 year career in Youth Justice, including 5 years as the Child Looked After Specialist, safely reducing the number of children in care being criminalised in Leeds.
Andi had an extraordinary route into his professional career. This included being born to a 17 year old Care Leaver, as well as his subsequent separation and care experience. This complex family and childhood experience developed into school exclusion, heroin addiction, child criminal exploitation and eventually 4 prison sentences. Andi’s practice and his motivation to support children caught up in his previous circumstances have been shaped by his own ability to overcome adversity and make a positive contribution to the vulnerable in our society with a belief that no matter how dark it gets, there is always light.

Book Andi Brierley

Andi explores failures of services to modify his environment which led him to him spending almost 4 years in custody and how challenging it was for him to utilise his own resilience to overcome leaving custody at 23 years old with very little support.

He presents a detailed link between his pre-birth circumstances, biological and environmental factors and how these factors impact on children’s ability to adhere to social expectations.

Andi believes that reflection and understanding one’s self can help any adult progress and overcome the most challenging life barriers.
Andi uses his own experience, his knowledge and expertise of becoming a specialist in his the Youth Justice field and 12 years of practice to discuss how we as a society can be more inclusive and prevent childhood incarceration.

Individual-Speakers-Quote

Andi Brierley delivered a hugely engaging talk at the recent Association of Directors of Children’s Services annual conference to an audience of local authority leaders in children’s services. Delivered from his perspective, it was an excellent insight into the direct experiences of young people who have been in care or entered the youth justice system. His story was both eye opening and inspiring which was reflected in feedback and questions from delegates. Andi now does amazing work to support children and young people facing similar challenges.
