Hamish says -  If you want a breakthrough look outside your current environment

With a CV that the Times described as “takes some beating”, Hamish Taylor has an award winning record of driving innovation and change in a number of very different environments and is now recognised as one of the world’s leading experts in Innovation/Change, Customer Focus/Brand management and Performance.

Hamish Taylor brings a rare combination of an outstanding CV (someone who has done it!) and a fantastic ability to inspire audiences – delivered through both (i) his enthusiastic, humorous style and (ii) the use of stories from his own experience, tailored advice and practical tools that the audience can take back to the workplace.

In the past few years, over 200 organisations in 30 different countries have sought Hamish Taylor's inspiration and he is regularly featured in the broadcast media. Without fail, he receives outstanding testimonials from his customers - from Prime Ministers and CEO’s to front line staff; from major multi-nationals to small groups; from Sales/Marketing and Executive teams to HR, Risk, Finance and many other functions. Whatever your audience, Hamish’s lessons provide relevant and practical ways of achieving breakthroughs for you and your team.

Hamish Taylor  was trained in Brand management at Procter and Gamble, a Management Consultant at Price Waterhouse, Head of Brands at British Airways, CEO of Eurostar, and CEO of Sainsburys Bank....all before he was 40! In all cases, he left behind a record of significant business growth triggered by a willingness to challenge the normal way of doing things and place the customer at the core of all activities.

He has also been dubbed the “master thief” by the Inspired Leaders Network due to his record of stealing ideas from one environment to use in another:- Examples include the use of Yacht designers for aircraft interiors, Disney to help with airport queuing, and rugby referees for new approaches to risk/compliance.

Although specialising in Keynote Speeches, Hamish Taylor is also much in demand for Facilitation and/or Masterclasses (including interactive exercises). He insists on a briefing call in advance to ensure he can tailor his messages to your audience and is happy to spend as much time as possible post speech to meet and discuss his lessons with you and your team. In many cases, this has lead to further facilitation work.

Hamish Taylor on Leadership

Hamish Taylor' s approach to leadership stems from both his experiences in leading turnarrounds and growth in a wide range of industries and his belief that leaders need to stop thinking of leadership in terms of “what they do” and behave in a way that maximizes the impact on the customers of their leadership (ie both external customers and colleagues).

Hamish focus’ on a number of key leadership challenges:-

How a clear “Customer Promise” is your most powerful leadership tool.

The customer promise builds all activity from “benefit to the customer” (rather than “our product/expertise”). This approach from the Consumer Goods industry proved critical in turnarrounds at BA and Eurostar and has been used in many other industries by Hamish.

If you build your leadership around your organisation’s customer promise, then you ensure focus in your key priorities/activities and communications.

The Customer Promise also creates a unified approach and common ambition for all departments

The Customer promise also stimulates major breakthroughs in Innovation as it provides a new starting point for idea generation and problem solving amongst your teams.

There are also lessons to be shared in how we need to encourage our teams to rethink the way they understand external customers (soft insights, the ability to share insights through the organization, removing pre-conceptions etc)

What is the benefit to your (internal) customers of your leadership?
They are more likely to follow you when they understand what is in it for them! This becomes a new design for your leadership.

Leadership lessons to be learned by taking Lessons from other leadership environments.
Leadership in tough circumstances is not exclusive to business. Hamish has “stolen” leadership lessons from many other environments including sport, the rescue services etc
It is also important to build a culture within the organisation where there is openness to new ideas.

There are a large number of lessons in “Making it happen”
New Communication models that can be “stolen” from advertising etc
The need to “Make it Easy” easy for staff (a lesson from British Airways)
The critical importance of Senior roles and their ability to role model the key behaviours.
The need to “Play to strengths” of your key people
The use of Champions rather than assuming that all staff will move at the same speed.
The creation of a “testing” culture where people are more willing to try new things
